Monsanto Fund China Green Village Completes Fourth Project

Charity Project Leads to CSR Excellence Award and Certificate of Honor

The Monsanto Fund China Green Village is a long-term charity project that has successfully improved the areas of Hebei, Jilin and Guangxi Province for the past several years with establishing biogas-generating pits, improving agricultural machineries, providing extensive technology trainings for farmers and building water towers in farming communities.

On Nov. 28, the fourth Monsanto Fund China Green Village project was completed, in which two villages in Henan Province, China were given access to clean water.

The $200,000 project helped residents in Guangwu County, Zhengzhou, Henan Province, China address a number of needs.

The water supply system used in the villages was built in early 1980s. It fell short of demand in terms of water pressure and supply capacity because of descending water levels due to tower leaks.

The Monsanto Fund China Green Village project provided three deep wells, five sets of in-depth bumps, three water towers, one removable water tower, one set of towerless water supply and an underground water pipe network upgrade.

The project helped improve the lives of 3,000 villagers by creating easy access to clean and sufficient water. In addition, the upgrades improved irrigation conditions and provided drinking water for livestock.

“Monsanto Company is a 100-percent agricultural company that concentrates on the harmonious development of society and nature as well as its own business development,” said Thierry Boyer, Monsanto China Region Lead. “Monsanto Fund Henan Project is the real action for us to show our gratitude for the community and to carry out our social responsibilities.”

“We hope the project will be something more than fund or material support,” said Boyer. “The most important thing is to improve the farming community and better their daily lives and educational environment with our contribution, which is meant to honor our commitment in China, ‘In China For China With China.’ We believe that we succeed when farmers succeed.”

Dong Rui, Deputy Director of Zhengzhou Municipal Working Commission for Agriculture and Rural Areas, said that the safety of drinking water in farming community is top priority.

“We really appreciate attention and support from the enterprises like Monsanto Company which has a strong sense of social responsibility,” Rui said. “This project has helped the farmers solve the problem of drinking water in the short term, while in the long run it will promote the local economy in general.”

In addition to access to clean water, a series of exercise equipment was provided for Nidian Village, and 15 computers and 50 desks and chairs were donated to Guangwu First Elementary School.

The charity project led Monsanto China to receive the 2013 “China Outstanding CSR Case Award” during the third China Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Excellence Award on Dec. 5 in Beijing. The event was sponsored by China Philanthropy Times and co-organized by Beijing Foreign Enterprise Human Resources Service Co., Ltd. (FESCO).

Additionally, the project was selected into the Collection of China and Foreign Enterprises’ Outstanding International CSR Cases and awarded with a certificate of honor on Dec. 16 in Beijing during an award ceremony held at the People Forum on International Social Responsibility.
