Global Contributions Report/2004-2005 : Introduction

We believe that the best philanthropic contributions are those that inspire people to do great things.

The organizations and programs we support are as varied as the places around the globe where we do business.

Our goal, however, is universal: to improve people's lives by closing the gap between their resources and their needs.

Ever since establishment of the Monsanto Fund in 1964, our philanthropic goal has been to bridge the gap between people's
needs and their resources.

We want to help people realize their dreams and to inspire them to enlist others in their vision. The people and places where Monsanto Company operates may be diverse, but our approach to philanthropy is consistent. We focus on four areas:

SCIENCE EDUCATION
We believe that the more young people are able to apply critical reasoning skills, the hallmark of a science education, the more they can affect the future quality of their lives. We support programs that train teachers and educate students in scientific disciplines.

NUTRITIONAL IMPROVEMENT THROUGH AGRICULTURE
We are dedicated to improving nutritional wellbeing through projects rooted in agriculture. With partnerships and other collaborations we pursue goals to train families in sustainable agriculture techniques, enhance the nutritional value of crops, and educate children and their families about nutrition.

HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT
We believe it is important for humanity to manage our natural resources effectively so that beauty and diversity are available to future generations. We support projects that improve water quality and wildlife habitat and teach the public about environmental conservation.

OUR COMMUNITIES
We are committed to being part of and giving back to the communities where our businesses operate and our people live. Because each community has particular needs and opportunities, we work in partnership with local Monsanto people and community representatives to align our support with community needs.

We strive to work with organizations and projects that support these four areas in communities where Monsanto and its employees have a presence. This report highlights just a few of our projects worldwide. We invite you to learn more about our partnering organizations and the work we share with them.
