Global Contributions Report/2004-2005 : Nutritional Improvement through Agriculture

Raising the Nutrition and Health of People with Leprosy

The social stigma of leprosy (now often called Hansen's disease) can leave those afflicted with it outcast and unable to participate in society. Many people with leprosy are impoverished and cannot afford a healthy diet, which compounds the effects of the disease. A new project in India is improving the nutrition and health of people with leprosy while helping them generate income through agriculture.

The Monsanto Fund is collaborating with Shoes for Hope, an aid organization that works in leper colonies in Tamil Nadu state. This organization's Embrace a Village program has initiated farming and gardening programs, improved the nutrition of children and families, and educated residents through classes and activities.

Thus far, the program has affected 3,000 people, including 400 children, improving their health and nutrition. As this project matures, it has the potential to help this community become self-sufficient.

$39,200
The Monsanto Fund has provided Shoes for Hope with a $39,200 grant over two years for its leprosy nutrition program.
