Global Contributions Report/2004-2005 : Nutritional Improvement through Agriculture

Supporting Small-scale Agriculture in the Developing World

Poverty and hunger remain daily challenges in the developing world. Families who want to grow their own food often lack access to technology, infrastructure, and resources, limiting what they can grow and how much income they can earn.

In 2005, the Monsanto Fund provided a grant of $25,000 to Foods Resource Bank to help increase food security in the developing world. In this program, Bank members donate seed, inputs, and time to grow crops in the United States. Foods Resource Bank then sells those crops and uses the funds generated to support small-scale agricultural production on a worldwide basis. Thus, resource-poor people around the world can know the dignity and pride of feeding themselves.

Through this effort, Foods Resource Bank and its donors are helping to alleviate hunger in a way that is sustainable and encourages self-sufficiency.
