Guidelines for Applicants:
(Kindly observe the following when preparing the proposal:)

  • White, 8.5 x 11 paper with a font size no smaller than 12 points and no less than .50 inch left and right margins.
  • Single sided printing only please.
  • Do not send proposal in a binder or folder.
  • Faxed proposals are not acceptable.
  • Attach only the extra materials requested in the application. Any additional supporting materials included will be discarded.
  • Proposal should be sent to the proper Monsanto Contact in your area, not the home office.
  • Grant applications are due no later than March 1 or September 1 of each year.
  • Awards are announced in June and December.

Cover Sheet (one page only please):

  • Today’s date
  • Organization name
  • Address
  • Telephone/Fax/Email (if applicable)
  • Director of organization
  • Contact person and title (if not director)
  • Amount of request
  • Period grant will cover
  • Total project budget
  • Total organizational budget (current year)
  • Organization’s mission (2-3 sentences)
  • Summary of project or grant request (2-3 sentences)
  • References (If this is a new relationship, list 2 or 3 current funders' names and phone numbers.)
  • Monsanto contact name, phone, country (if applicable)

Narrative (maximum of 5 pages sections A, B, C, and D)

A. Introduction and background of organization

  • Briefly describe your organization’s history and major accomplishments.
  • Describe your current programs and activities.
  • Who is your constituency? How are they involved in your work and how do they benefit from this program and/or your organization?
  • If you are a local organization, describe your work with the community. If you are a state, regional, or national organization, describe your work with local groups.

B. Describe your request (incorporating the following points)

  • Problem statement: problems, needs, issues being addressed.
  • Is this project new, an expansion of an existing program, or sustaining an ongoing part of your organization?
  • What are the goals of this project and how do you plan to reach those goals?
  • What is your long-term strategy for funding at the end of our grant period?

C. Evaluation/Recognition

  • How would you define success for this project? How will you know if it has been achieved?
  • What types of recognition opportunities do you plan to pursue?

D. Organizational Structure/Administration

  • Who will be involved in carrying out the plans outlined in this request? Include a brief paragraph summarizing the qualifications and responsibilities of key individuals involved.
  • Provide a list of the current board of directors.
  • How is the board selected, who selects the members, and how often?

E. Finances (Please attach the following.)

  • Most recent, completed full year audited financial statement
  • Current annual operating budget
  • Project budget
  • List individually other funding sources for this request. Include amounts and whether received, committed, or projected/pending.
  • A copy of your 501 (c)3 tax letter or other appropriate documentation to indicate tax-exempt status, whether in the US or outside of the US.
